Salvage vs. Replacement: Understanding Carpet Vulnerability

The term “waterproof carpet” usually refers to the backing material. However, no carpet is entirely immune to the consequences of a severe flood, especially if the water is highly contaminated (Category 3).

Category 1 Flood Recovery

If you experience a clean water flood (Category 1) from a burst pipe, synthetic carpets with specialized backings can often be salvaged. However, the underlay cannot. The padding behaves like a sponge and must generally be removed to allow the subfloor to dry. Immediate commercial extraction is vital to save the primary flooring textile.

When Replacement is Mandatory

If your carpet has been exposed to Category 2 (grey water) or Category 3 (black water/sewage), it must be safely removed and disposed of. Porous materials cannot be completely decontaminated from raw sewage or heavy biohazards.
