The Truth About Carpet Buckling After Water Exposure
Buckling, rippling, or “wavy” carpet is a direct structural failure resulting from prolonged moisture exposure. When a carpet gets wet, the secondary backing absorbs water and expands. If the carpet is not rapidly dried using commercial protocols, the latex adhesive holding the primary and secondary backings together breaks down (delamination).
Attempting to fix this yourself by stomping it down or placing heavy furniture on it will not work. In fact, ignoring the underlying moisture issue invites toxic mould growth.
Why Professional Intervention is Required
To safely resolve buckling, the carpet requires professional re-stretching using a power stretcher. A knee-kicker alone is insufficient for major ripples and will likely cause the backing to tear. More importantly, before any physical repair can happen, the subfloor and the carpet must be entirely freed of moisture.
